Embracing the Power of Starting: A Journey to Success

Writer's picture: Sarah PopeSarah Pope

In a world filled with endless possibilities, opportunities, and dreams, it's all too easy to get caught up in the "what ifs" that hold us back.

What if I suck at it? (What if you just start?)

What if I fail? (What if you learn something and grow?)

What if people think I'm a fraud? (What if it's good enough?)

What if I stumble (What if you are prepared?)

What if you succeed?

What if your whole life has been preparing you for this very moment?

What if, instead of doing more, what you need is to do less?

What then? What are you waiting for? Permission?

These questions often linger in our minds when we are on the brink of pursuing our passions, launching a project, or taking a leap of faith. The fear of the unknown, the fear of failure, and the fear of not being "ready" can be paralyzing. However, what if the key to unlocking your potential lies in embracing the power of starting?

What If You Just Start?

The first step towards any goal is often the most challenging. The fear of imperfection and the desire for everything to be just right can be overwhelming. But what if the act of starting is precisely what propels you forward? Imagine the doors that could open, the opportunities that could arise, and the lessons that could be learned if you simply take that first step.

What If It's Good Enough?

Perfectionism is a common roadblock on the journey to success. What if, instead of aiming for perfection, you strive for progress? The pursuit of excellence is admirable, but sometimes good enough is exactly what's needed to get things moving. Understand that your best effort in the present moment is indeed good enough to set things in motion.

Done is better than perfect.

What If You Are Prepared?

Consider the possibility that every experience, challenge, and triumph in your life has prepared you for this moment. You possess unique skills, knowledge, and perspectives that no one else can replicate. Trust in your abilities and acknowledge that you are more prepared than you think.

Last Sunday at 10 AM I led a Yin Yoga class at Grounded on Glen St, in the heart of downtown Glens Falls, in upstate NY. I arrived at 8:30 AM, and sat in my truck for an hour while I prepared a plan for the class ( I would have prepared at home but kids). You know ya girl was overthinking it. You know my entire life was all the preparation I needed. Nevertheless, I had my Yoga Anatomy book, bookmarked with post-its all around. In my notebook, I was drawing little pretzel yogi stick figures for each posture I planned to incorporate. And on several other pages, I wrote out the guided meditation word for word (I'm typically a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pantser, not a plan it word-for-worder). But on this day, I found myself calmly, quietly, gently preparing.

What If You Succeed?

The fear of success can be just as paralyzing as the fear of failure. What if you acknowledge that success is not a distant dream but a tangible reality? Visualize your success and understand that you can turn your aspirations into achievements.

What If Instead of Doing More...

In a world that often emphasizes hustle and constant busyness, what if the key to success lies in doing less? Simplify your approach, focus on what truly matters, and eliminate unnecessary distractions. Often, the most significant progress comes from a place of simplicity.

Teaching that yin yoga class felt like coming home.

What Then... What Are You Waiting For? Permission?

The only permission you truly need is your own. Waiting for external validation or approval can be an endless cycle. Take ownership of your dreams and aspirations. The power to start, to succeed, and to live the life you envision lies within you.

The "what ifs" that often plague our minds can be transformed into catalysts for positive change. What if you choose to embrace the power of starting today? What if you let go of the doubts and fears that hold you back? The journey to success begins with a single step, and that step starts with you. So, what are you waiting for? The world is ready for the unique contribution only you can make.
